Algerian security forces foiled a plan to assassinate Egyptian President Abdul Fatah Khalil Al-Sisi following information about a terrorist attack planned by Ansar Sharia group, Egyptian reports said on Sunday.
According to Egypt’s Yaoum Sabe3 newspaper, Cairo foiled an organized terrorist attack which targeted sovereignty places such as ministries and security headoffices in the capital.
Egyptian Algerian intelligence cooperation helped to foil the attacks which were planned at the same time with Al-Sisi’s inauguration.
The newspaper cited an “Algerian reliable source,” saying Algeria’s security forces conveyed a detailed report to the Egyptian intelligence about Ansar Sharia’s plan.
The group operates in North Africa and has connections with organizations in Sinai.
The report says Ansar Sharia cooperated with terrorist organizations in Egypt to attack Arab embassies, ministries and security headoffices in Cairo.
Ansar Sharia’s activists have very sophisticated weapons as they took rockets from military storehouses in Libya, according to the same source.
The group is supported by Al-Qaeda and smuggles heavy arms from Libya. “Because of that, Algeria stepped up intelligence coordination and cooperation with Egypt,” said the report.
