CANDIDATE: Richard Duke Buchan III
Richard Duke Buchan III most recently served as the National Finance Chairman of the Republican National Committee. Prior to that, from 2017 to 2021, he was the U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain and the Principality of Andorra. Mr. Buchan is the CEO of Hunter Global Investors L.P., which he founded in 2001 in New York City and is now based in Palm Beach, FL. He has traveled, lived, and/or done business in more than 50 countries, including Morocco, for more than four decades. He is also actively involved in educational and philanthropic causes. Mr. Buchan’s previous diplomatic experience, combined with his long-standing leadership in business and philanthropy, make him well qualified to serve as the next U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco.
Prior to founding Hunter, Mr. Buchan was a Managing Director at Maverick Capital, Ltd. in Dallas, Texas and New York City, and a Vice President in the Global Financial Institutions Group in Investment Banking at Merrill Lynch & Co. in New York.
A native of North Carolina, Mr. Buchan grew up on and still manages the farms that his family has owned for generations in the Tar Heel state and New York. He grows truffles and over 100 varieties of heirloom tomatoes, vegetables, and row crops, and he raises horses. Mr. Buchan and his wife have a teenage daughter and two teenage sons. All three are Eagle Scouts.
Mr. Buchan received a BA in Economics & Spanish from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1985, and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1991.
He also attended La Universidad de Valencia in Valencia, Spain, La Universidad de Sevilla in Seville, Spain and the CERAN language school in Spa, Belgium. He is fluent in Spanish, conversant in French, and has a working knowledge of Catalan, Italian, and German.
