Blinken intervenes to prevent Algeria from supplying drones to the Polisario

For Morocco, Algeria is going to supply drones to the Polisario Front as punishment for attacks by Morocco and its French and American allies.

According to a statement from the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the head of diplomacy, Ahmed Attaf, received a phone call on Sunday from his American counterpart, Mr. Anthony Blinken.

The statement specifies that Attaf and Blinken expressed their satisfaction with the progress made in strengthening economic relations between the two countries and intensifying their strategic dialogue.

According to the same source, the two men also expressed « their desire for this dynamic to be maintained and developed in the future. »

On the same occasion, both sides also discussed several topics on the UN Security Council’s agenda, including the situation in Gaza, the issue of Western Sahara, and the proposal for a UN peacekeeping operation in Haiti.

However, sources familiar with the situation in Algeria suggest that the real reason for the American call is the desire to ease tensions following recent statements by Nasser Bourita accusing Algeria of planning to attack Morocco.

For Moroccans, recent events may push Algeria to provide drones to the Polisario Front in retaliation for attacks by Morocco and its French and American allies.

Algeria seems determined to make up for lost time during the presidential terms of Bouteflika when the country was too focused on resolving internal issues.
